Women Danger Index reveals SA most dangerous country for solo female travellers

The Women Danger Index has ranked South Africa as the most dangerous country for female travellers to visit on their own.

The ranking, which was published on travel advisory blog Asher & Lyric, was based on the 50 most-visited tourist destinations around the world. The ranking was created using eight factors: safe to walk alone at night, intentional homicide of women, non-partner sexual violence, intimate partner violence, legal discrimination, violence against woman attitudes, gender inequality, and global gender gap.

Though legal discrimination against women was low in the country, the Women’s Danger Index gave South Africa a high danger grade on safety for women to walk alone at night, intentional homicide of women, and non-partner sexual violence.

Brazil, which came second, was given a high danger grade on the safety of women when walking alone at night and intimate partner violence. Russia, Mexico, Iran, Dominical Republic, Egypt, Morocco, India, and Thailand were in the top ten most dangerous countries for solo female travellers.

According to the index, the safest countries for women to travel solo were Spain, Singapore, and Ireland.
