For those of you who spent many happy hours huddled around the family radio, waiting in anticipation for those gems such as Springbok Radio’s Squad Cars, Lux Theatre of the Air, The Mind Of Tracy Dark or Inspector West, to name just a few, this show will bring back wonderful memories. This is a light-hearted trip back to when radio was king.
This is a rich and beautifully crafted piece of theatre. Malcom Gooding, well-known to all South Africans as arguably the finest voice artist the country has produced has crafted, with his team of writers, an hour-long show that weaves a colourful, hilarious and rich tapestry of those great days of South African radio and the characters that were so much part of our lives in those days.
With his mellifluous and beautifully modulated, seductive voice, Gooding takes us on a journey back to those unforgettable days. His incredible ability to switch between different characters, voices and accents, together with some of the most amusing anecdotes and the startling reminders of those swaggering days of cigarette advertising, coax from the audience not only belly laughs but also the gut-wrenching nostalgia evoked by so many of those forgotten soundbites.
Video may have killed the radio star, but Gooding’s performance raises a smile and underlines just how powerful the medium can be. Book at 011 486 0935.
Cape Town performances will be held at Kalk Bay Theatre at the end of February.
