Maxwell in SA this weekend

The award-winning singer is scheduled to perform at Cape Town’s Grand Arena on 5 December, the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg on 7 December, and at the Wavehouse in Durban on 9 December.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Maxwell’s music has throughout his career extended over various genres, including R&B, funk, and soul. He is considered as one of the forerunners of the neo-soul subgenre of the late 90s, alongside other artist like D’Angelo and Erykah Badu.

Maxwell, who enjoyed great success with his 1996 debut album, ‘Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite’, released two more studio albums before going on an eight-year hiatus.

In 2008, he made his comeback at the BET Awards, where he responded to questions about his lengthy break from music by saying that he wanted “to just take time off. The music industry has so much competition and there was no rush for me”.

He officially returned to the music scene in July 2009 with the release of ‘BLACKsummers’night’, which is said to be the first album in a planned trilogy. The second album in the trilogy, ‘Summers’, will be out in 2014.
