Across the world, the Kruger National Park and Sabi Sands Game Reserve are recognised as premier safari destinations in Africa. With two million hectares of untouched wilderness and as many 147 mammal species and over 500 bird species, how could we possibly argue with that?
The Sabi Sands is renowned for its luxurious lodges, off-road open vehicle game drives and incredible big cat sightings but for many, the Sabi Sands is well above their budget.
Unfortunately, many travellers fail to consider other surrounding game reserves, in fear that the experience would not compare. But what could be better than a safari with fewer crowds, off-road game drives and bush walks led by professional guides, incredible Big 5 sightings and luxurious accommodations that won’t completely break the bank?
Thornybush Game Reserve nestles between the Kapama and Timbavati Game Reserves, spanning across 11,500 hectares of prime big game habitat.
The reserve hosts 11 luxurious lodges – each unique in design and catering to the needs of even the most discerning travellers. But even on an exclusive game reserve, there are traveller favourites:
Thornybush Game Lodge is one of the bigger lodges and a favourite among families. The lodge sits beside the seasonal Monwana River and boasts 20 suites with outdoor showers and private decks with views across the savannah and nearby waterhole.
Saseka Tented Camp is a brand new addition to Thornybush, with eight luxury tents that feature outdoor showers, private plunge pools and a viewing deck commanding spectacular views of the bushveld. Saseka Tented Camp is perfect for couples with its romantic ambience.
Thornybush River Lodge prides itself on offering a very personalised experience, boasting only six lavish suites – including a honeymoon suite and the superb two-bedroom royal suite. River Lodge is ideal for couples and larger families who want a more exclusive safari experience.
Shumbalala is one of the smallest lodges at Thornybush, with only four luxury suites and one presidential suite. Each of the suites is spacious with a bedroom, lounge, ensuite bathroom and private viewing deck that overlooks an active waterhole. Shumbalala is well-known for its personalised service and fine dining experiences.
Besides the safari activities that are included in a stay at Thornybush, guests can also enjoy optional boat cruises, helicopter flights, cultural tours, hot-air ballooning, treetop canopy tours, and a visit to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre.
