Cycle to safety

Joburg cycling enthusiasts are hitting the streets in droves as the weather turns warmer and events like the 94.7 Cycle Challenge edge closer.

Safety while cycling is essential, especially when cycling into remote areas on the outskirts of the city.

Gilbert Hickman, a spokesman for the Muldersdrift Community Action Group (MCAG), encou-rages cyclists heading out of the northern suburbs towards areas like Muldersdrift to be conscious of their surroundings at all times and preferably cycle in groups.

“We have the most brilliant cycling routes just on the outskirts of Johannesburg and Pretoria which should be enjoyed. So please keep safety tips in mind when heading out.

“A number of the hotels in the area like Riverstone, Heia Safari and Avianto are also ‘Cycle friendly’ hotels.

“They offer cyclists the opportunity to leave their cars at the hotel before heading out.

“Some of the hotels, like Valverde, even offer child-minding facilities for parents wanting to cycle together,” says Hickman.
