Condé Nast Traveler has published its readers’ 2019 favourites for travel and Cape Town hotel has received recognition. 600,000 people voted for the most popular destinations, including hotels and game lodges.
This year’s Gold List of the editors’ favourite hotels, resorts, and cruise ships spans six continents and 36 countries – Gold status meaning voters would definitely go back to the destination given the opportunity.
Cape Town’s Ellerman House received a nod from the editors.
The editors said of the hotel: “Twenty-six years on, Ellerman House is still everybody’s fantasy bolthole in Cape Town: minutes from the best beaches and the Table Mountain cableway, but close enough to the city and its dynamic food, art, and design scene. Sandwiched between Lion’s Head and the Atlantic Ocean, the Cape Edwardian mansion looks like a private residence from the road, one of many overlooking the sea in the wind-protected suburb of Bantry Bay. And that’s exactly what keeps guests coming back.”
Jack’s Camp, Makgadikgadi Pans, in Botswana, the One&Only Le Saint Géran in Mauritius, Six Senses Zil Pasyon in Seychelles, the andBeyond Bateleur Camp, Masai Mara, in Kenya and the L’Hôtel Marrakech in Morocco also received nods from the editors.
In the Reader’s Choice Awards category, the Royal Mansour, Marrakech in Morocco was voted best hotel in Africa, while the Best resort in Africa award went to the Sirikoi Lodge, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, in Kenya.
Oliver’s Camp in Tanzania took 15th spot and the Morukuru Family Beach Lodge came 4oth in the Best Resorts in the World category.
In the Top Hotels in Africa category, South African hotels dominated the Top 30 list with the One&Only in Cape Town, La Residence, Ellerman House, The Oyster Box, Cape Grace, Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel, Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa, The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa, The Plettenberg, Mont Rochelle Hotel & Vineyard, Birkenhead House, The Cellars-Hohenort, Taj Cape Town, AtholPlace Hotel & Villa, and More Quarters Hotel made.
These were the top 20 resorts in South Africa:
