The DA established itself as the official opposition party in South Africa in 1999, having started as a liberal party in the late ‘80s. It has governed the Western Cape since 2009. In recent years, however, it is facing increasing competition from newer parties such as the EFF, ActionSA and the Freedom Front Plus.
