The opening round of the 2014/15 season would be played on August 8, 9 and 10, but the specific dates of the respective matches were still to be determined.
Sundowns had a proud record in the Premiership, winning three years in succession, from 1998 to 2000. They then won twice in a row in 2006 and 2007, and waited seven years for their next Premiership trophy.
Sundowns may have history on their side, having won the most league titles, but they would need to keep in mind that their nearest rivals, Kaizer Chiefs, had a disappointing finish to their season and were a mere two points behind.
Chiefs would commence their campaign with an away game against Free State Stars.
The opening weekend included a Soweto derby between four-time winners Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows.
Opening fixtures:
Sundowns v Maritzburg United
Free State Stars v Kaizer Chiefs
Orlando Pirates v Moroka Swallows
AmaZulu v Ajax Cape Town
Polokwane City v Tuks
Wits v SuperSport United
Chippa United v Platinum Stars
Black Aces v Bloemfontein Celtic
