The disgraced Australian trio of Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft have been handed huge bans by Cricket Australia (CA) for their involvement in the ball-tampering saga.
The governing body on Wednesday confirmed that Smith and Warner – the Baggy Green’s now former captain and vice-captain – have been given a one-year bans each.
The sanctions have massive implications for Australia as those two men represent the spine of a batting line-up that hasn’t always performed consistently.
Both men have already quit their captaincy posts in the Indian Premier League and the glitzy T20 tournament’s governing body announced they won’t feature for their respective franchises.
Meanwhile, Bancroft has been banned for nine months.
He was the player that actually engaged in the tampering act but was apparently tasked to do so as one of the junior members of the squad.
The players have the right to appeal their sentences and can call upon as many witnesses as they feel possible.
