Ottis Gibson gets his first major endorsement as Proteas coach

And it comes from one of the key players in his plans ... a certain AB de Villiers.

In contrast to the diplomatic Kagiso Rabada, AB de Villiers seems far more keen to have Ottis Gibson as the new Proteas coach.

The former West Indian fast bowler, left his role as England’s bowling coach, had his new role confirmed earlier this week.

The Proteas have encountered Gibson a fair amount of time this year following their tour of the United Kingdom.

De Villiers admitted he doesn’t know him too well but it is thought Gibson’s appointment did convince him to play Test cricket again.

“I don’t know him personally. I’ve obviously seen him quite a few times,” South Africa’s middle order dynamo said in a video post.

“I’ve never had a proper conversation with him. He’s played a lot of cricket in his days so he has a great insight into the game. I’m very excited to get to know him better and to start the season off with him as coach.”

De Villiers noted Gibson’s over ten years’ experience as an international coach and is confident of a fruitful association.

“I think we’ve got a long road to walk together as a team with him and I’m very positive about the road ahead,” he said.

“Ottis has played the game and will understand the ins and outs of what we need to do to become a better team and so I’m looking forward to start off with him.”

However, De Villiers was also gracious in his praise for Russell Domingo, Gibson’s predecessor.

“We’ll miss Russell Domingo a lot, he has had a fantastic run as coach we got along with him really well,” said De Villiers.

“He has had a big impact on all of us as cricketers.”

Ironically, De Villiers will be Domingo’s marquee Proteas player at the Pretoria Mavericks in the T20 Global League.
