WATCH: Speedy Akani Simbine has ‘amnesia’

South Africa's sprinting hero says he can't really remember his magnificent 100m win at the Commonwealth Games.

Akani Simbine suffers from amnesia after his gold medal in the 100m of the Commonwealth Games … in a manner of speaking.

South Africa’s sprinting hero admits the last part of the race was nothing more than a blur.

“I literally only really remember from the 60m mark,” Simbine told Team SA.

“I got out and didn’t see anyone. Then I saw myself move on the stadium television screens and then I didn’t see anyone else move and said, ‘I actually just won this race’.”

That’s probably not much of surprise given that he crossed the finish line in 10.03.

“It’s just an amazing feeling to come here for my country and be able to do this,” he said.

Meanwhile, the man who finished just behind him, Henricho Bruintjies, believes he now has a monkey on his back after his stellar performance.

“I feel like the monkey just jumped on my back so now I must make sure I can do it again on the international scene,” he said.

“I just made it into the final and now to step up on to the podium is also a big step up for me and although a lot of people haven’t expected this, I’ve always believed in myself.”

Both men are part of the 4×100 relay team and are keen to add to their medal tally given their cracking current form.
