‘Take that’ – Striker explains why he celebrated in ex-coach’s face

'I think he was disrespectful to me,' said the striker explaining his explosive celebration.

Some players contain themselves and choose not to celebrate after scoring against their former clubs, but Newport County striker Kevin Ellison doesn’t subscribe to this notion.

The 42-year-old, who joined County after leaving Morecambe, not only celebrated his goal, but he celebrated it in front of the opposition bench.

Ellison fell out with his former side’s coach Derek Adams, who made him train on his own and didn’t include him on the team sheet towards the end of his nine-year stay at the club in 2019.

After scoring the third goal in County’s 3-1 win over his former club Morecambe in the fourth tier of the English football league, the seasoned striker rushed towards the opposition bench and screamed at Adams.

The celebration was nothing short of “take that”.

After the match Ellison said he felt disrespected by Adams for asking him to train on his own and admitted that he had thought about celebrating in his former coach’s face for a long time before the match.

“I think he was disrespectful to me, the way he treated me and I thought if I get a chance I wasn’t going to paper over cracks. I showed him what I thought,” Ellison was quoted by DailyMail.

After making 352 appearances for Morecambe and scoring 81 goals, fans from both sides supported the striker’s decision to scream at his former coach.

Ellison was released by Morecambe when Adams joined the side, Country snapped up the striker as a free agent, signing him on a one-year contract.
