Concrete barriers built to boost San Siro security

A new “anti-traffic” zone was established in the area around the landmark Giuseppe Meazza stadium — the San Siro’s other name — in time for a series of concerts earlier this summer.

In recent weeks the Milan Prefecture, chief of police and town hall met for talks, according to a web report on Gazzetta dello Sport, and decided on the new initiative designed to stop vans and vehicles used by attackers in their tracks.

The concrete barriers will be in place for Sunday afternoon when AC Milan host Genoa at the San Siro for their opening home game of the season.

Fifteen people were killed and 120 injured last week when terrorists drove vans through crowds of people at the popular Las Ramblas boulevard in Barcelona and in the seaside resort of Cambrils.
