Diouf urges SA players to go to Europe

Former Senegalese international El Hadji Diouf has urged South African players to ply their trade overseas.

The African football legend says talented SA footballers like Percy Tau need to realise how playing overseas can make them better players.

“If you talk about South African football, South Africa has the best teams on this continent, like Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Sundowns. So many great players. But I ask the young players not to think about playing at home to be comfortable here. South Africa and Africa needs them to go and play for the big teams in the world and come back to the continent as heroes and winners,” said Diouf in an interview with the Safa website.

“I watch them play four times against Senegal, they play the best football I have seen in my life but they lack experience. They have to go out and get it because South Africa needs it, I don’t understand how come players want to stay here and only play here. I watch them week and week, I like South African football. I watch Pirates, Chiefs and now Sundowns who are doing well on this continent. But they have to go out and play abroad they have so much talent. The guys who scored against Senegal, they play for Sundowns they are very good footballers and they have to leave this country, it will be a good thing for South African football.”

The former Liverpool player says South African football was successfully in the past because it had players that were playing in Europe.

“Like back in the day South African football was very successful because you have players from Leeds United, Porto, Ajax.  I want to say to the boys you have talent you have everything but you need to go out and play for the big team because South African football needs it.”
