TBT: Saul Mmethi

In this week’s instalment of Throwback Thursday, former Dynamos midfielder Saul Mmethi recalls when his former coach Jacob Sakala asked one of his teammates to fake an injury so that he could come on.

According to Mmethi, Sakala was a charismatic individual and used humour to distress players before important games.

“We were playing well all season and had three games left to win the league. The club employed a technical director and the guy came in and was involved in the team and wanted to call the shots,” Mmethi told Phakaaathi.

“Sakala didn’t get to pick the starting line up in the third last game. The new technical director left me out of the team. Then as the game went on one of our teammates fell close to the coaching box, right in front of the bench and the coach asked my teammate to fake an injury so that I could come on as a substitute.

“We later laughed about it and it was funny how my teammate was acting injured and we all played along and they bought it.”
