SuperSport announced this weekend that they would not be showing any of the upcoming qualifiers for the 2021 Afcon, after the Confederation of African Football cancelled their long-standing broadcast deal with French media conglomerate Lagardere.
Caf, however, as Phakaaathi has previously reported, are still in negotiations with SuperSport to try and reach a new agreement for them to show the qualifiers.
And Gay Mokoena, Safa CEO, told Phakaaathi yesterday they the SABC told him they were also trying to make arrangements to show the game live.
“It is still a work in progress,” said Mokoena.
“Caf is handling it. I spoke to the SABC today and they are also working on something. I am aware that Caf are speaking directly to SuperSport outside of the agreement with Lagardere. As we stand now, nobody is confirmed (to show the game), but I know the SABC is working hard, and SuperSport are working hard.”
“We are trying our level best to make sure people get to watch the game.”
Phakaaathi’s attempts to reach the SABC for comment on Wednesday proved unsuccessful.
