Pirates legend sees financial silver lining during lockdown

Football players have been subjected to salary cuts since leagues from across the world have been suspended due to coronavirus. PSL players are criticised for their wasteful spending which has led to most of them having their cars, as well as property, repossessed when their contracts expire and they can’t make the monthly repayments.

Motale has always advocated for saving money as a football player in preparation for life after retiring from the beautiful game.

The former Pirates defender says players from his generation earned enough money for them to survive and couldn’t save as they were living from hand to mouth, but says the current players have an opportunity to save money and start businesses they can survive off when they retire.

“I have always talked about saving money. And if you can’t save you will be in trouble at some point,” Motale was quoted by Isolezwe.

“The coronavirus has taught players and the club to have money put away to use during tough times. They need to survive on a portion of their salaries and save some of the money.”
