Mosimane lauds his side’s ‘best’ Champions League campaign

Despite the somewhat disappointing and anticlimactic draw that Mamelodi Sundowns got away to Angolan side Petro de Luanda in the Caf Champions League match-day five group stage encounter about a week ago, Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane is confident that his team is still in control of Group C.

The goal still remains for Masandawana and that is to finish the pool phase at the summit of Group C and for that to be possible, Downs will need to either draw or beat Wydad Casablanca in their final group game set to be played in the capital city this Friday.

“The plan is to finish on top of the group and at this point, we are top, but we still might not qualify as the group winners until match-day six happens. Unfortunately, we still have to play for results and I thought we won’t play for results against Wydad,” said Mosimane.

Sundowns will be hoping that history repeats itself as their Moroccan rivals have never got the better of Bafana Ba Style in any of their four visits to Pretoria.

“Every coach wants to win the tournament and every coach believes that they can win any match. Yes it not easy, there are teams that are very strong in this competition and realistically it is not easy to win this tournament but you need to go as far as you can. Last year we went to the semifinals to we need to try,” said “Jingles” who went on to praise his team for the “best” group stage campaign yet.

“We scored two goals away which is a good record to score away. We also have not lost a game in the group and we have never achieved so many points away. We got five points out of nine points on the road and at home, we got six points. Yes, we did not score against Wydad away but we scored against USM Alger, so it is the best record we have ever had in the Champions League.”
