Mokwena regrets ‘thuggish behaviour’ comment after Soweto derby

Chippa United coach Rulani Mokwena admits he allowed his emotions to get the better of him when he slammed Kaizer Chiefs players after his side lost 3-2 to their crosstown rivals.

Mokwena was angered by a late penalty which was awarded to Chiefs on the day that saw his side lose all three points to Amakhosi.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach described the hard tackles dished out to his players by Chiefs anchor Willard Katsande as thuggish, saying some Amakhosi players should have been sent off.

In an interview on Marawa TV, the well-spoken tactician said he looks back at some incidents and asked himself a lot of questions about his character.

“There is power in emotional intelligence or in being able to keep your cool in the public domain,” said Mokwena on Marawa TV.

“For example, in the game against Chiefs where we lost 3-2 to a penalty that shouldn’t have been a penalty. The Katsande tackle, I termed that thuggish behaviour and I will never live that down. It is a moment I look back at and laugh and say is that me.

“These are some of the moments you look back on and say they could have handled it better … with a bit more emotional control.”
