Wits continue quest for survival

Defending league champions Bidvest Wits continue their quest to move out of the relegation zone when they face Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday.

The game is set to kick off at 3-30pm and sees the Clever Boys out for a second successive league win following their much-needed 2-0 victory over SuperSport United in midweek.

That victory was however not enough to launch Wits out of the drop zone as they remain 15th, but just a point behind Platinum Stars and 13th-placed AmaZulu.

Wits coach Gavin Hunt was pleased to see his side taking their chances for a change against SuperSport, although he points out they can’t get ahead of themselves after one win.

“I have been in South African football since 1980 as a player and a coach and I have never seen a team miss chances like I have seen this year. If we were converting our chances we’d be top of the league.

“We have only won one game, so I can’t say we have turned the corner. Let’s win a couple of games and we will see,” said Hunt.

The Johannesburg team will be without the suspended Bongani Khumalo, one of their goal-scorers against Matsatsantsa.

Chippa meanwhile ended a run of two consecutive defeats by recording a 2-0 win away at AmaZulu last weekend and they have ambitions of their own, currently lying seventh and a not-too-distant nine points behind league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

They have made several signings in the transfer window, including a loan deal for Orlando Pirates winger Thabo Rakhale, who is out to impress coach Teboho Moloi.

“It is a great feeling to be reuniting with coach ‘Tebza’. He knows what I’m capable of.

“He always pushes me, always makes sure that I perform to the best of my ability. When coach Tebza was at Pirates, I was consistent in my performances.

“He also promised to bring me back to that form that I use to show before. I’m happy to be at Chippa and I want to contribute to the team’s performances,” he said.
