We have to bring our A-game against Wits – Johannes

The Citizens beat the Students 1-0 in a league match last week, but Johannes says Wits will be much tougher this time around.

“Last season they [Bidvest Wits] beat us, they expose us. They’re a difficult team to play against, but we’ll be better this time around. We have to bring our A game, we have to be prepared. We played them last week, and it was wave after wave of attack from them, but we defended well, and we need to do that again this Sunday,” said Johannes.

“Defensively, we conceded a lot of goals last season, so it was something that we worked on during the preseason. We know that in order to defend well we have to defend as a unit, and this season, we’re doing that better than last season. It’s still a long way to go though.

“I think we have a good blend of youth and experienced players like Teko [Modise], Shuaib [Walters], myself and Lebo [Manyama]. We also have a great coach [Benni McCarthy] who has played at the highest level of the game. He is new in the game, but he is a winner. Last season, we fell short of meeting our targets, and now we want to win this cup.”

The former Mamelodi Sundowns defender is one of the best performers at City, and he says he is enjoying life in Cape Town.

“I’m playing the best football of my life at the moment. Coming back to Cape Town was the best decision I have ever made. I’m with my family and friends, I’m in a good place. My mind is at ease, and it shows on the field. I want to perform week in and week out. Every game I play, I play it like I have something to prove.”
