We have the best young players in the squad – Singh

Portugal-based striker Luther Singh says the South African Under-23 squad is made up of the best young players in the country.

This is after the team went through to the final round of the Caf Olympic qualifiers with a 6-1 aggregate win over Angola.

Singh and company won the first leg 3-1 in Luanda, before going on to seal the tie with a 3-0 win at the Bidvest Stadium on Tuesday night.

“We have the best young players in this squad. It is an exciting group and anyone can play in the first 11 and still perform well. I just think the group is well together and we are happy with each other. We push each other, even if you are on the bench or grandstands, we push each other and it makes it exciting and brings togetherness in the team as well,” said who plays for Chaves in Portugal’s top flight league.

The SA Under-23’s team will face Zimbabwe in the final round of the qualifiers, with the winner of that tie going to Egypt to compete at the Caf-8 nations tournament, where top three nations will qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

The striker says the team’s goal is to qualify for the Olympics, but they know it won’t be easy.

“We all want to go to the Olympics, but it won’t be easy, we know that. It starts here and we are going to take it game by game.”
