WATCH: Hunt reflects on SuperSport’s ‘sweet’ victory over Chiefs

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt took a veiled swipe at Kaizer Chiefs after guiding his side to victory against Amakhosi in the DStv Premiership this past weekend.

A goal by Ghampani Lungu in the first half earned Matsatsantsa a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Chiefs at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday.

Following the win, Hunt took to Twitter to express his joy of getting one over his former employers. Hunt was surprisingly fired by Chiefs in May 2021 having led Amakhosi to the semi-finals of the Caf Champions League.

“3 points never tasted so sweet. Thank you to everyone who came out to support today,” read the tweet from Hunt.

Commenting on the game, Hunt said SuperSport had opportunities to ‘kill’ the game off in the first half and they didn’t take them and by doing so they put themselves under unnecessary pressure.

“I thought first half… really good. We didn’t get that second one (goal) which would have given us a bit of a cushion. Then we dropped off ten metres, which is natural and we invited them a little bit,” said Hunt.

“The first half we had some opportunities at the back of them and we should have played better balls across. But if had said to me, one day to go and you’re lying second, well I think we’re lying third, the team that we put together. I would have taken it,” added Hunt.

“We know what’s happening with the club, it is not a secret that when I came I knew what I was coming to. I knew that we had to duck and dive.

“We had to make a plan and get a player on a free and get guys on loans to make the squad stronger. We did that and I if you look back, we had four draws in recent games and we missed penalties, we could have been well clear.

“We would never have caught Sundowns. But we would certainly have been in the Champions League which is something that I don’t think anybody envisaged when we started. You have to commend the players, they have been good, they have stuck in it. We have players but we don’t have players who can fill in. The guys who have come like Tyson,” continued the former Black Leopards and Swallows FC coach. 

“If you ask any coach, anywhere in the world, with one game to go to, he will tell you we should have done better in this game. We were lucky here and we weren’t lucky there. 

“We have missed I think three penalties this year, which is an extra six points, because you should hit the target. There were games where we were fortunate but I think we have gotten better and it is important to stabilise and keep certain players if we can,” concluded Hunt.
