Tinkler couldn’t handle the pressure – Matthews

SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews insists that coach Eric Tinkler was not pushed out of the club.

The former Bafana Bafana international resigned from his job as Matsatsantsa coach after the team blew hot and cold for most of the season, with rumours coming out saying he was forced out of his job.

Matthews, however, has dismissed those rumours. Matthews says Tinkler failed to handle the pressure that comes with coaching United.

“We did put pressure on Eric and we kind of apologise for that,” Matthews was quoted as saying by the Daily Sun.

“But that’s the job the head coach gets paid for, and that’s the jobs expect him to do. The pressure was more from himself. I can’t say a bad word about Eric. There were a lot of boxes that he ticked, but clearly the chemistry wasn’t there with the players in the dressing room.

“Twice we had contractual obligation to dismiss him but chose not to. The poor run wasn’t only about the coach but a multitude of factors.”
