Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane has revealed his candidate for one of the big PSL awards – and believes it should be his teammate who bags it.

Zwane was named Man-of-the-Match in their DStv Premiership match where they beat Marumo Gallants 2-0 on Saturday evening.

And speaking to SuperSport TV afterwards, Zwane suggested that his goalkeeper Ronwen Williams should get the Goalkeeper of the Year award.

The PSL is set to award top performers in its various competitions on May 28 after the Nedbank Cup final the day before.

Williams set a new record in the PSL when he kept his 18th clean sheet in one season, breaking Moeneeb Josephs’ record of 17. Josephs set his record during his time at Orlando Pirates.

“I think he did well for us this season. He’s been helping us with build-up,” said Zwane of Williams’ impact at Sundowns.

Williams joined Sundowns amid doubts that he could fit in or be able to topple long serving Denis Onyango as No.1.

But he has proved to be the right fit and made the No. 1 spot his own since joining in June last year.

“You can see the way he passes the ball. He makes us tick as a team even though he’s a goalkeeper.

“He’s an extra man for our build up. Hopefully, he’ll get the big award,” added Zwane.

Williams is an obvious nominee for the Goalkeeper of the Season in the DStv Premiership.

Zwane denies Sundowns let up after league win

Zwane also commented on Sundowns’ performances which had been unsatisfactory in the Premiership since they were confirmed as winners a few weeks ago.

Against Gallants, Sundowns returned to their ways with a superb display but Zwane was still not entirely pleased.

“I think personally I did well, but obviously there will always be room for improvement… But I think we did well.

“The game went according to our plan. We tried to play more and keep more ball possession.

“We created more chances and took our chances. And at least today, we managed to take two of our chances.”

Zwane however does not feel that Sundowns have let up since winning their seventh consecutive league title.

“Our focus is we want to push ourselves to finish on a high note for the league. So, each and every game is important for us. We’re pushing well as a team.”
