TBT: Welcome “Mshini” Mazibuko

In this week’s instalment of Throwback Thursday, former African Wanderers and Manning Rangers midfielder Welcome “Mshini” Mazibuko talks about the time when he threaten to quit the club after Wanderers refused to release him for Bafana Bafana.

“Wanderers took a lot of my time, they didn’t want to release me,” Mazibuko told Phakaaathi.

“”Then in 2002 the Cosafa Cup was playing, and the Bafana coach called me up for the tournament because I had a good season with my club. But the club said I can’t go.

“I wanted to go and play for the national team because I knew that playing in Africa would make me a better player, it was a different level to what I was used to.

“They called him, but he insisted that I was not going to the national team. I then went to them and said ‘if you don’t let he join the national team I will not play another game for the club’.

“They were upset by my ultimatum but they allowed me to go after I threatened not to play for them anymore.”

Mazibuko played for Wanderers for seven years, giving a good account of himself in local football and even attracting interest from other local teams.
