The 39-year-old’s most notable tale of death has to be the passing of former AmaZulu striker Siyabonga “Benni” Mkhwanazi.
Mkhwanazi died while the team were in camp before a league game against Mamelodi Sundowns.
The striker fainted in his room at the club house and was declared dead when he arrived in hospital in Durban on September 11, 2008.
“I had the best and the worst moments of my football career at AmaZulu, I played my best football there and had the best time playing football at Usuthu,” Mabaso told Phakaaathi.
“But the worst moment of my career was also there when we lost Benni.
“We were all there at the club house preparing (for the game against Sundowns) because we were playing on the weekend. He was in his room and then he had to be rushed to hospital.
“He and I were close and when he died that hit me hard, plus it was at the club house and we were all there. It took me from a good place to a bad place that week.”
