Tau confident of Al-Ahly’s victory against Sundowns

"A difficult opponent but we are also prepared for them," says Tau.

Al-Ahly superstar Percy Tau is not reading too much into their last trip to Tshwane where they were outclassed and hammered 5-2 by Mamelodi Sundowns in the group stages of last season’s CAF Champions League.

The Red Devils and 11-time champions league winners are in town to face their old enemy in the semi-finals of the African Football League at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday.

The Brazilians are slight favourites ahead of the first leg having brushed aside Petro de Luanda in the quarter-finals of the eight-team lucrative competition.

Tau reckons they have improved a lot since the last time the two sides met as Ahly went on to be crowned champions of Africa.

“That’s also a big difference, being CAF champions, it shows that we are a team that is able to take a knock and keep going,” Tau said ahead of the much-anticipated match.

“The only thing that matters right now which is totally different from the last time we met is that we’re in the semi-final. The last time played, we were in the group stages. We will do everything to get to the final and win.”

The Bafana Bafana International is once again facing his former team where he won the league twice and Champions League in 2016 before moving to Europe in 2018. He joined Ahly two years ago under then coach Pitso Mosimane.

“It’s good to be back, we are playing against a team that has changed so much. I don’t know if you are aware but most of the players that I have played with here have left the team,” Tau said.

“So it’s a totally different team but we want to do better than we did the last time and we want to get to the final.

“I’m expecting a team that wants to win and wants to get to the final. A difficult opponent but we are also prepared for them.

“It’s one of those games where I’m playing against familiar faces and a coach that I’ve worked with too and I’m looking forward to the game.”
