Swallows legend survives armed robbery

Former Moroka Swallows midfielder Maimane Phiri was left shaken but unharmed as gun wielding robbers made off with his car and cellphone.

The former Bafana Bafana player says the robbers were looking for money at his pub but couldn’t find any as he does keep cash at the premises.

“Two armed men came into the pub. One of them pointed a gun at me, demanded money and the location of the safe,” Phiri told Sowetan.

“I told them we don’t keep money here but they were adamant until one of them saw the safe but there was nothing [in it].

“They didn’t get any money, they took expensive whisky bottles and I can’t tell the amount but they were many. I had to trace my phones’ locations to Kew and called the police on the suspects’ whereabouts,” he added.

Phiri’s white Mercedes-Benz was later recovered in Kew, Alexandra.
