SuperSport edge 10-man City in an entertaining league clash

SuperSport United and Cape Town City played to an entertaining tie which produced a red card, an own-goal, but produced five goals as United edged Cape City 3-2 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday.

It was a good result for the Pretoria based side, as the club jumped to fifth spot on the table with 26 points after 17 games, while Cape City remained in ninth place with 22 points having played 16 matches.

The hosts scored just before the 10 minutes through Gamphani Lungu, before Teboho Mokoena’s brilliant free-kick made it 2-0 for United in the 27^th minute.

Cape City almost leveled the scores just before the 20^th minute, but SuperSport goalkeeper and captain Ronwen Williams pulled out a brilliant save on his return to the team after missing the previous two games to Nathan Fasika before Mokoena’s goal.

A minute into the second stanza, Cape City would find a life-line to get back into the game after Khanyisa Mayo was brought down inside the box by Onismor Bhasera. Fagrie Lakay took the responsibility to take the spot-kick and made no mistake as he sent Williams the wrong way to pull one goal back for the Cape side.

But, City would go on to finish the game with one man short after Thabo Nodada got a red card following his second bookable offense in the 55^th minute.

With 10-men on the field, Cape City would not put their heads down, as they went all out to get an equaliser. They would finally be rewarded in the 72^nd minute thanks to an unfortunate own-goal by SuperSport youngster Kegan Johannes to take the score-line to 2-2.

But, Johannes would make amends in the last nine minutes of the game to put Matsatsantsa back into the lead with a well taken shot from inside the box after a delivery from a corner kick and the goal proved to be the winning goal for the Pretoria outfit.
