Sundowns style did not suit me – Brockie

Once considered the country’s deadliest striker, Jeremy Brockie is hoping to close an unfortunate chapter where he struggled for game time at Mamelodi Sundowns and regain his buzz at his new team Maritzburg United, whom he joined on loan this week.

Brockie has accepted that sometimes things just don’t work out and while the Kiwi striker was aware of the competition at Masandawana when he left SuperSport United, he never anticipated he would not get a real chance to prove himself.

“I don’t think their style suited me,” admitted Brockie this week. “That’s probably obvious and whenever I tried to fit into the style… it’s just one of those things that happens. We had different expectations of what it was going to be like. I never expected the team to change their style for me. I was trying to change and fit into it and it didn’t really work out,” added the 31-year-old.

Now it is all about resuscitating his career under Eric Tinkler at Maritzburg, who he said was the club who showed the most interest in him.

“It’s always easier to join a new club when there are familiar faces there. I worked with Eric at SuperSport. I know how professional he is. That definitely played a role in my decision to come here.

“The team also showed a lot of interest and if you feel appreciated it automatically gives you that extra buzz,” he said.

“There are expectations on me to score goals like I did before I went to Sundowns. It is up to me now to show I can still score goals consistently,” he said.

And as he focuses on helping Maritzburg get back to being one of the feared sides in the Absa Premiership, Brockie says he is not thinking about a possible return to Sundowns.

“I still have a year’s option after this year and it is up to Sundowns to decide.”
