Teboho Mokoena’s first-half opener was cancelled out by Wandile Duba early in the second half. Du Preez scored from what appeared to be an offside position on the stroke of full-time to seal a 2-1 win for the Soweto giants.
Sundowns’ Cardoso – ‘The goal was offside’
Cardoso was visibly upset in the post-match press conference while dissecting the action-packed game at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday night. The Portuguese coach showed a still image of the offside goal to the media as he reviewed the game.
“Obviously, the goal was offside, and if you didn’t see it, go back and check because it was clear. When you work in a country that doesn’t have VAR, this is what happens,” Cardoso said while holding up his phone to illustrate his point.
“Go back and look at the image from TV. You see, this is the team that lost and is out of the competition because of a mistake by the referee. I think we have been penalised enough throughout the season regarding refereeing mistakes. I remember goals we scored in games we didn’t win.
‘Congratulations to them’
“We need to stand up, we win together and lose together. We should have done more, and I’ve got nothing to say about the Chiefs team. They fought, and congratulations to them and their coach.”
