Komphela resigned shortly after Chiefs lost to Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup semifinal at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Amakhosi’s loss to Stars saw fans invade the pitch, destroying broadcast equipment.
Komphela told SAfm there were signs that he would be pushed out of Chiefs by fans, who could threaten his safety and the team’s.
“I went to Durban with two outfits to change,” said Komphela. “The signs were always there.”
