Sikhosana calls for Shakes Mashaba’s Bafana return

Former Orlando Pirates striker Jerry Sikhosana says the South African Football Association (Safa) should consider giving Shakes Mashaba his Bafana Bafana job back.

In the wake of Stuart Baxter failing to qualify Bafana Bafana for the 2018 World Cup, Sikhosana says he’ll support any move to re-appoint Mashaba as the national team coach.

“I wish and I will support a move to have Bra Shakes (Mashaba) back as the head coach of our national team‚” Sikhosana told Sowetan.

“Looking at the way the boys were committed and playing under him‚ you could tell we were heading in the right direction until he was fired.

“In my honest opinion we had the best coach in Bra Shakes and he understood the players and they wanted to play for him‚” added Sikhosana‚ who represented Bafana Bafana at the 1998 World Cup in France.

“We had our format with Bra Shakes but he was sacked because of problems that did not have much to do with football and it was more administrative.

“I feel pity for our current players who had to go through this transition‚ which is very difficult,” concluded Sikhosana.
