Sekhukhune edge SuperSport to move second on the log

The match between SuperSport United and Sekhukhune United had all the makings of a great game except the most important ingredient – which is the goals – as there was just one scored by Sekhukhune United in the latter stages of the match at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville.

The victors chiseled out a 1-0 win to move second on the DStv Premiership table.

While the supporters might have been treated to just one goal by Tshidiso Patjie, there was no lack of drama as referee Victor Gomes flashed two red cards in the opening stages of the game.

The very moment that Gomes flashed the first red card of the game to Vusimuzi Mncube, you would swear that Macdonald Makhubedu was a statue as he stood stuck, his face depicting a lot of surprise paired with shock as the sending off came in the seventh minute. Mncube lashed on to Iqraam Reyners with a dangerous tackle and Gomes did not hesitate to pull the dismissal card.

About seven minutes later, SuperSport were on the receiving end and debutant Thalente Mbatha got himself sent for an early shower after committing a similar foul on Cheslyn Jampies, much to the relief of the visitors, who were back on level pegging where playing personnel is concerned.

The second stanza saw Babina Noko dominating the proceedings but much like the opening half, they could not get any shot on target. However, it was in the 75th minute when Prince Nxumalo tried his luck at Ronwen Williams but the Bafana Bafana skipper was up to the task as he pulled a fine save to keep the effort out. Soon after, Willard Katsande also had a shot at goal which forced a full stretch from Williams.

The Spartans’ goalie was eventually beaten by Patjie in the 88th minute when he was found on his bike by Seth Parusnath, and the 31-year-old kept his cool and did not panic in front of goal as he delivered the sucker punch to Kaitano Tembo’s side.
