SA officials set to undergo VAR training

Referee Victor Gomes and assistant referee Zakhele Siwela have been invited to Cairo to undergo Video Assistant Referee (VAR) training.

The course will take place from October 24 to 29.

VAR will be used in this year’s Caf Champions League and Confederation Cup finals.

Gomes and Siwela are part of a group of nine officials from around Africa who will be attending the course in Cairo.

Other officials are: Janny Sikazwe (Zambia), Ghead Grisha (Egypt), Abid Charef Mehdi (Algeria), Tessema Weyesa (Ethiopia), Bakary Papa Gassama (Gambia), Emiliano Dos Santos (Angola) and Jean Claude Birumush (Burundi).

A Football Association Chair of Referees Committee Natasha Tsichlas is happy with the faith shown by Caf in SA referees.

“We are proud as Safa that our officials are among the top elite constantly selected by Caf to handle high profile matches. We are in the process of producing several upcoming officials and with the partnership we have entered with OUTsurance, we have no doubt our officials will soon be among the best in the world,” Tsichlas told the Safa website.
