PSL is better than Azerbaijan, admits Ndlovu

Bafana Bafana striker Dino Ndlovu has admitted that the level of football in Absa Premiership is higher than that in the Azerbaijan league where he plies his trade.

Bafana head coach Stuart Baxter had previously been reluctant to call up Ndlovu for Bafana duty, questioning the standard of football in Azerbaijan.

But he has now called the Qarabag striker into his squad for Saturday’s 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso at FNB Stadium.

“Everyone is entitled to their opinion, I think the PSL is of a slightly higher level than in Azerbaijan, mainly because there are only eight teams in the Azerbaijan league and there are 16 in the PSL,” said Ndlovu on Wednesday at Bafana training.

Ndlovu has scored plenty of goals in Azerbaijan, netting 15 times in all competitions last season and already bagging five goals this campaign, including four in the Uefa Champions League qualifying rounds.

This is in stark contrast to the PSL, where Ndlovu’s highest tally in one season was three goals, for a combination of SuperSport United and MP Black Aces in the 2014/15 season.

Ndlovu’s performances for Qarabag in the Champions League this season, however, where he has played both Chelsea and AS Roma, have indicated that he might just be able to step up to the plate at international level.
