‘Mama Winnie’, as Madikizela-Mandela was fondly known in politics, passed away after a long illness on Monday. She was 81.
Madikizela-Mandela, unlike her ex husband, the late Nelson Mandela, is not known for her fondness of sport.
She had a club named the Mandela United Football Club in the 80s, but the club was Madikizela-Mandela’s bodyguards and there’s no record of it playing in any league.
Kaizer Chiefs said they would miss Madikizela-Mandela’s remarkable resilience, determination and tenacity, while Orlando Pirates saluted her for the great contribution she has made in her fight for freedom for the oppressed.
Here are some of the tributes from the PSL clubs:
Lala ngoxolo Mbokodo.
We will miss your remarkable resilience, determination and tenacity.
Rest in Peace Mam’ Winnie.
Love & Peace.
