PSL clubs pay tribute to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela

Premier Soccer League clubs have joined South Africans and people around the world in paying tribute to the late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.


‘Mama Winnie’, as Madikizela-Mandela was fondly known in politics, passed away after a long illness on Monday. She was 81.

Madikizela-Mandela, unlike her ex husband, the late Nelson Mandela, is not known for her fondness of sport.

She had a club named the Mandela United Football Club in the 80s, but the club was Madikizela-Mandela’s bodyguards and there’s no record of it playing in any league.

Kaizer Chiefs said they would miss Madikizela-Mandela’s remarkable resilience, determination and tenacity, while Orlando Pirates saluted her for the great contribution she has made in her fight for freedom for the oppressed.
