Pitso prepared for City onslaught

Pitso Mosimane is expecting Cape Town City to come out with all guns blazing when they meet Absa Premiership pacesetters Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld tonight.

Benni McCarthy’s City side can boast of having completed a league double over Masandawana last season, but Mosimane refuses to use those games as a point of reference.

“When you look at City saying they have beaten us twice and we have never beaten them before, we will not be emotional and we will not personalise it,” he said.

“It has nothing to do with that, it is a different time. I remember when Platinum Stars, Moroka Swallows and Bloemfontein Celtic were beating us all the time, but it is a different story now.
“Benni is an attacking coach. His team is always going forward, they are one team that plays football like Celtic, they don’t sit at the back,” he added.

Mosimane went on to throw his weight behind the former FC Porto forward, saying he, along with other local-born coaches need to be given a chance to prove their worth in the Absa Premiership.

“He is in the coaching space now and I am happy he has been given a chance and doing well like Teboho Moloi at Chippa United. I always want our local guys to be there. I don’t want them to lose their jobs.

“I don’t know if Benni will stay for a long time at City, but we will see,” he added.

Perhaps what could be described as the elephant in the room will be addressed tonight, as Teko Modise and Mosimane will cross paths on the field for the first time since Modise left Downs.

In his book The Curse of Teko Modise, the former Sundowns midfielder revealed he and Mosimane had not been on speaking terms in the last two years. However, Mosimane refuses to comment on Modise’s biography.

“Teko has done nothing bad to me,” he said. “I only want to remain with the good memories, the goals that he scored and the passes that he made, he is a legend and I am happy that he was part of us, from the very beginning until the end.”

If Sundowns win this evening, they are guaranteed to head into the Christmas break nine points clear at the top of the table, in what is increasingly looking like a one-horse race for the league title.
