Pirates player arrested for speeding

The player, believed to be Happy Jele, was said to have been travelling at a speed of 223km/h in a 120km/h zone near Sandton.

He was driving a 135i BMW when he was caught speeding.

Jele allegedly claimed he was on his way to attend to his sick child when he was caught, but the information was later discovered to be untrue.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar confirmed there was a speeding operation in Sandton this morning.

“Remember, we can’t name people until they appear in court. All I can confirm now is that there was a speeding operation this morning and they were people arrested and placed at Sandton police station. The Sandton police station has more details,” said Minnaar.

Gauteng MEC for community safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane has condemned the incident.

“I’m disappointed at Happy Jele’s driving behaviour and conduct. Professional players are supposed to be role models and safety ambassadors. The law enforcement agencies will not tolerate lawlessness behaviour on Gauteng roads, especially with the high rate of fatalities reported in the province,” said Nkosi-Malobane in a statement.

Jele is expected to appear at Randburg Magistrates’ Court today.
