Pirates legend takes his humour gift to centre stage

By Michaelson Gumede

“Magents”, as he is affectionately known, was known to be the joker during his playing days where his career saw him feature the likes of Jomo Cosmos, Dynamos and SuperSport United.

“They will be positives jokes, ones that will be constructive,” he said in a conversation with Phakaaathi.

Motale also went on to guarantee that no form of profanity will be dished out while he is on stage.

“There will be no swearing during my session so what I am saying in this is that you can bring your wife and children,” said Motale.

When quizzed about the kind of jokes that the audience can expect, Motale said: “The jokes will be sensitive but in a jokingly manner,” he replied. “For example: when I talk about the muti part, some may not be comfortable about that.”

“Yes, I will definitely joke about the muti and what happened when I was a player,” he emphasized.

“I will joke about the transfers that happened in my career… being given the marching orders by some teams and also about how joining a team was and the stay at that team. I will be talking about my journey in football.”

He continued: “Things like during the game and you want to rush to the toilet and there’s no way you can ask the referee to stop the game and say ‘I have to go to the toilet, I’ll be back’.”

More often than not, many ex-footballers either lean towards the idea of opening an academy or go into coach. How did you make your way towards comedy post your playing career?

“That is the question that everybody is asking – why comedy.”

“So basically, everybody is writing a book now but I decided to do it my way and tell my story through the jokes and come with something new,” Motale said.

“During my playing days I have always been joking around in the team, trying to break the ice and make people easy,” he added.

The event is set to take place on May 25 at the K-Space in Kempton Park. Tickets available at www.kickofcomedy.com
