Pirates left to rue missed chances after Polokwane stalemate

Orlando Pirates inconsistency in the DStv Premiership continued after the club played to a 0-0 draw with Polokwane City, a result which Bucs midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi has described as very disappointing at the Orlando Stadium on Friday.

Bucs had scored first in the match, thanks to Maswanganyi’s goal in the 39th minute, but Rise and Shine cancelled the lead with a beautiful goal by Given Mashikinya in the second half.

It was Bucs’ second consecutive draw, having played to another stalemate against AmaZulu prior to the Polokwane game.

Maswanganyi believes Pirates could have done better in the clash against Polokwane, with the Buccaneers having created plenty of goal-scoring opportunities.

“It’s a very disappointing result, especially since we have not been winning in the league, two draws back to back. It’s very disappointing, especially when we are playing at home. We wanted to win the game, but we ended up playing to a draw” said the Bucs attacking midfielder.

“We could have scored more goals, but we wasted chances. This is what happens when you don’t use your chances. We created a lot of chances, but we couldn’t even score more than two goals. We only scored and they got an equaliser which ended up being a draw game.”

Maswanganyi, who played at the Stars of Africa Academy before moving to Portugal, says Pirates need to start winning matches in the league.

“We need to start winning our games because we are capable of winning, but now we have dropped, we are not winning and we want to win. I think the next game has to be a win, no matter what, home or away, we have to win,” he concluded.

Pirates will next travel to Western Cape to take on Cape Town Spurs at Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday, 1 November.
