Pirates coach Micho banishes league title talk

Micho Sredojevic and his Orlando Pirates charges are not thinking about the Absa Premiership title even though their emphatic 4-1 victory over AmaZulu FC clearly puts them as title contenders along with Bidvest Wits and Mamelodi Sundowns.

Bucs are now sitting on 36 points after 21 games, two points behind leaders Wits, who failed to extend their lead at the top of the table after a 1-1 draw with fellow title-chasers Sundowns, who are in third place, level on 36 points with Pirates and separated only by goal difference.

The Serb insists on taking things step-by-step and not to be carried away with nine more games to the end of the season, with the team now firmly putting their focus on their next league encounter against Golden Arrows at Sugar Ray Xulu.

“We have our strict targets that we are focusing on. The first thing for us is that we are focused on how we are going to approach our game against a top coach (Steve Komphela) and top team Golden Arrows next Saturday. How we are going to match and outmatch them.

“It will be a difficult match,” said Sredojevic.

“We signed a document with a good result by scoring four goals. But the document needs to be stamped, we shall try our best to get the performance and the result and that is the only thing we are focused on.

“The rest of the things are too far away, there is still too much to play for. For us 27 points and other teams more. And when you look at it, there is still too much to play for, however, we don’t want to set our sights beyond Durban. The rest of the things we have no right to think about.”

The Usuthu victory was Bucs’ second this year, having last won a league encounter when they beat Chippa United 4-2 at the FNB Stadium early in January. Sredojevic hopes his side put up a great performance against Arrows which will put them in the right frame of mind ahead of their Caf Champions League tie against Zimbabwe’s FC Platinum on March 9 at Orlando Stadium.
