“The player requested to be released from his contract and the Club has agreed to his request. The Club would like to wish Maphanga the best of luck in the future,” read the Pirates statement.
Maphanga joined Pirates from Chippa United in January last year and after spending a year with Bucs, he was sent back to Chippa on loan in January this year.
He came back to Pirates at the end of the 2018/19 season, but was not in the coach’s plans for this coming season.
Word is that he refused to return to Chippa to spend this season on loan and asked to be released.
