OPINION: Chiefs fans must chill, the club hasn’t won anything yet

It’s amazing how a prolonged trophy drought can affect the fans and the management of a team.

This past weekend we witnessed the Motaung brothers, Bobby and Kaizer Jnr and their sister, Jessica and the Kaizer Chiefs fans rejoicing at Amakhosi’s come-from-behind Nedbank Cup semifinal victory against Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Stadium.

It was all smiles from the coaches, to the players on the field, to those in the stands.

The celebrations continued on the streets as well as on social media platforms. For a person who doesn’t watch football, I’m sure many were thinking that the once mighty Amakhosi had finally ended their trophy drought.

But the reality was that Chiefs had only won a semifinal match against Sundowns and they will meet Orlando Pirates in the final on May 10.

Chiefs will meet a Pirates side that has not lost in the final since Jose Riveiro took over as the club’s head coach in 2022. They will face a Pirates side that has won five of the last six matches in all competitions between the two sides.

So if it was the Pirates fans who were so excited about reaching the final I would understand, but Chiefs fans?

With their club having failed to win a trophy in almost 10 years, one can understand in some ways where the excitement stems from. I mean we’re talking about a club once known as ‘cup specialists’. But now they have been reduced to a team that barely qualifies for the top eight.

Save room for more disappointment

For Chiefs to celebrate beating Sundowns in the semifinals of the Nedbank Cup the way they have been celebrating since Sunday, the mighty Amakhosi have indeed reached an all-time low.

My advice to Amakhosi is to chill a little and save their celebrations for May 10 . That’s if their team does what no other team has done since Riveiro took over and beat Pirates in the final of a competition.

Until then they must just chill and prepare themselves for another possible disappointment. I mean, we’re talking about Kaizer Chiefs here, the same team that has been disappointing their fans for almost 10 years.
