Onyango will be assisted by former Vipers SC’s defensive midfielder, Hassan Wasswa Mawanda.
Cranes coach Multin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic says Onyango was automatic, as he served as deputy to Goffrey Massa, who retired from international football late last month.
“Naturally, after Massa, it was Onyango. He [Onyango] is the new captain because of his experience and leadership abilities,” Sredojevic told Kawowo Sports.
Uganda’s next match will be 2019 Afcon qualifier against Cape Verde at Estádio Nacional de Cabo Verde away in Praia on June 13.
Meanwhile, Onyango is set be included in the Sundowns squad for Wednesday’s Absa Premiership clash against Bloemfontein Celtic.
