Nine players to be shown the door at Highlands Park

Highlands Park coach Owen Da Gama is set to wield the axe and rejuvenate his side in preparation for the next season.

The Lions of the North sealed their return to the top flight with a 2-0 win over SuperSport United at the Lucas Moripe and managed to finish in the top half of the table. However, there are players who are no longer in the plans of Da Gama and they will be released in due course and ex-Orlando Pirates player Mahlatsi Makudubela is expected to headline the exodus.

“We have sat down with management and we have given them a list and there are financial implications involved because some players are still under contract. We are releasing about nine players and we need management to sit down with them and go through the process,” said Da Gama.

“Some of the players who are going to be released are not going to be released because they are not good enough, it is just because they did not get a chance and that is all down to the fact that we have to be consistent,” Da Gama added.

He continued: “To those who have been told already I really sympathise with them because we had to wait until after the last game then you show the respect and you sit down with a player. I want to sit down with these players who are going to be released because and motivate them and tell them where I think they went wrong. Some were just unfortunate that there were other players in their positions who were doing well.”
