NFD wrap: Highlands, CT All Stars leading the way

Highlands Park and Cape Town All Stars lead the way in the National First Division following the completion of the second round of fixtures this weekend, while Jomo Cosmos bounced back in style with a thumping win.

The only two teams to boast 100 percent records after two sets of fixtures are Highlands and All Stars, with the former defeating Royal Eagles 2-1 at Harry Gwala Stadium thanks to goals from Phoka Mofokeng and Petrus Ngebo, while the latter edged Richards Bay 1-0 with an early strike from Lucky Setelele.

Placed third and fourth on four points apiece are Mthatha Bucks and Black Leopards respectively. Bucks were too strong for Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila, winning 2-0 in the Eastern Cape, while Leopards conceded a late goal to Mhlengi Sigwebela to be held 2-2 at home by Ubuntu Cape Town.

The biggest win of the weekend came from Jomo Cosmos, who handed University of Pretoria a 5-0 thumping on Sunday at Vosloorus Stadium, with Tebogo Makobela, Mxolisi Machupu, Sicelo Mkhize, Cyril Lingwati and Clifford Mulenga getting their names on the score sheet.

Mbombela United also showed their class with a 3-1 win against hosts Super Eagles at Goble Park, while Stellenbosch FC and Uthongathi FC played to a 1-1 draw at Athlone Stadium, with Mogamad de Goede’s early goal cancelled out by Xolani Slawula.

The NFD will go into recess for the upcoming international break and return with a full set of fixtures on September 9-10.
