New bonus plan boosts Maritzburg players

Maritzburg United players could each pocket R100 000 in bonuses by end of the season should they win each of their last 10 remaining matches.

The team’s desperation to move away from the relegation places in the Absa Premiership where they remain rooted at the bottom of the log standings has made the club management to offer an extra R10 000 per player for a win.

According to a report in The Witness on Thursday morning, the players were promised the loot before last weekend’s 3-1 win over Polokwane City.

The report quoted players who asked not to be named saying the new bonus structure had worked like magic to get the players to give their best.

“We are motivated and confident that we will survive,” one of the sources said.

The new incentive plan was put into place after a team meeting recently and are said to have made every player want to give their all to ensure the club survives.

It is however unclear when the club will source the money for the bonuses as they have always decried their financial status, claiming that the more than R3-million a year they are given by the local council in Pietermaritzburg is not enough for the club to be sustained.
